There’s something incredibly special about bringing a brand-new story to life, especially when it’s written by one of our own.
This February, Adirondack Regional Theatre (ART) is proud to present the world premiere of MAMA: Survival Guide Required, an original play by award-winning local playwright Tracy Vicory-Rosenquest. This heartfelt and deeply human production is a celebration of motherhood in all its messy, exhausting, joyful, and transformative forms.
A Love Letter to Mothers—and Those Who Mother
For Tracy, this play is deeply personal.
“My mom has been my survival guide through motherhood. I needed a daily dose of her humor to carry me through the toddler years. And I still need it. This play is for mothers and those who mother—to give space to our humanity and to celebrate the tribe of people who get us through parenting.”
MAMA: Survival Guide Required is, at its core, a love letter to mothers everywhere. Through laughter, tears, and moments of raw honesty, the play explores the impossibly hard and heartbreakingly beautiful realities of caregiving and connection.
It’s a story that invites audiences to laugh, cry, and maybe even squirm a little as they recognize their own experiences on stage. It reminds us that while there may be no perfect guidebook to parenting, none of us are ever truly doing it alone.
A Cathartic and Authentic Experience
Director Mark Preston makes his directorial debut with this production, and he couldn’t be more thrilled with the team bringing it to life.
“The writing of this play hits on multiple levels. It portrays an unfiltered authenticity of this shared experience, which is especially powerful due to the feeling of isolation that parenthood can manifest, allowing the audience to commiserate together in laughter at these absurd but familiar situations. Each rehearsal has been a cathartic experience for sure!”
That sense of shared understanding—of sitting in a room full of people who just get it—is exactly what makes live theatre so powerful.
